Welcome to Year 1

A huge welcome to Year 1! It is the start of a brand-new year and we can’t wait to make it an amazing one. We have got lots of exciting learning planned for you!  We are looking forward to being able to develop our friendships, maturity, listening and a positive mindset, all when aspiring to be the best we can be in school.

Continuous Provision

The year one classrooms are set up in a similar way to Foundation Stage so that the children are building on prior learning. The children have access to areas of provision which are designed to challenge, enhance and practice their learning. Provision encourages children to use resources that they have previously encountered with an adult and use these independently.

Great Fire of London Workshop videos

On Monday 19th May  Year 1 had a 'Great Fire of London' experience day to finish our topic. In the morning each child designed a typical 1666 house, covered cardboard boxes in paper and then painted details on their house. A small group also worked together to create a larger model of St Paul's Cathedral.
In the afternoon Year 1 then met Mrs Pepys who told each class all about her experiences in 1666, her husband Samuel Pepys who wrote the diary that told us all the information about what happened, where the fire started, and how they buried important items to keep them safe from the fire.
With Sue, our workshop leader Year 1 went onto the school field and safely observed the effect of fire. Sue put straw inside each box model house and then created a street in London. She then started the fire (in the bakers shop in Pudding Lane of course!) and the children could see how easily the fire spread, helped by a breeze and houses being placed close together.
Year 1 had a fantastic day and absolutely loved their experience. "Best day ever!" "That was amazing!" "My favourite part was when my house burned!"
